Hotel Elizabeth in the center of Trenčín is located in the immediate vicinity of the most important historical monuments of the city, which document its rich and fascinating past. The most striking icon of the city is the Trenčín Castle, majestically towering above the Váh River valley. A unique testimony to ancient history is a Roman inscription from 179, carved directly into a massive rock cliff below Trenčín Castle. This unique artifact is among the rarest Roman written monuments in Central Europe and proves the presence of Roman legions in the territory of today's Slovakia. The uniqueness of the Hotel Elizabeth also lies in the fact that you can view this historical inscription directly from the interior of the hotel through a glass wall, where the report of the commander of the Roman legion Maximian has been preserved.

Roman inscription

It is a unique monument, carved directly into the castle rock. It is evidence of the presence of Roman legions in Central Europe, specifically from 179 AD. The inscription commemorates the victory of Emperor Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic tribe of the Quadi. This artifact is extremely rare not only for Slovakia, but also in the wider European context.

It was discovered in the 19th century and has since been considered one of the greatest historical attractions of the city. It is located in an easily accessible place on the castle cliff, it is visible only from the Hotel Elizabeth, directly from the summer terrace or restaurant. It is protected as a national cultural monument.

Peace square

Peace Square is the heart of the historic center of Trenčín, lined with burgher houses with Baroque, Renaissance and Classicist elements. The square has a typical elongated shape and is a pedestrian zone full of cafes, shops and restaurants.

Its dominant feature is the Plague Column, which was built in 1712 as a thank you for ending the plague epidemic. Some buildings have preserved their original Renaissance arches and facades with coats of arms of old families. It is an ideal place to relax after a city tour. It feels cozy and historical, but at the same time modern and lively.

Executioner's house

The Executioner's House is one of the most mysterious and interesting buildings in Trenčín. It is located near the City Castle and, according to legend, the city executioner lived there, who carried out executions and torture. The house is now open to the public as a small museum and gallery. The interior contains replicas of torture instruments and an exhibition about medieval punishments and justice.

The building has typical Renaissance architecture with thick walls and small windows. Visitors can see the cellar, where the torture chamber was supposedly located. The overall atmosphere of the house is a bit spooky, but at the same time very intriguing. It is a place that attracts lovers of mysteries and history.

City tower

The City Tower is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the city. It was built in the 15th century as part of the city fortifications and guarded the entrance to the historic center. Today it is open to the public and visitors can climb to its observation deck. From there, there is a beautiful view of the Trenčín Castle, the square and the city panorama.

In the past, it also served as a watchtower and fire tower. The tower houses an exhibition about the history of the city and the tower itself. It is a popular tourist destination due to its accessibility and historical value.

Parish church of the Birth of Virgin Mary

This Gothic church is one of the most important sacral buildings in Trenčín. Its history dates back to the 14th century, but it has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, especially in the Baroque period. The interior of the church is decorated with Baroque altars, beautiful stained glass windows and wall paintings.

The church is still an active place of worship and spiritual life of the city. There is also a former Franciscan monastery next to it, which is now used for various cultural purposes. From an architectural point of view, it is particularly interesting for its combination of Gothic and Baroque elements. It is one of the most beautiful monuments of the old town.

Ossuary (St. Michael's Carcase)

The ossuary is located next to the Parish Church and is one of the few preserved ossuaries in Slovakia. It dates back to the 15th century and served as a place to store the bones of the deceased when the cemetery near the church became overcrowded. The building has a simple Gothic architecture and consists of two parts - a chapel on the upper floor and an ossuary (ossuary) underground.

The chapel is dedicated to St. Michael, the patron saint of the dead and a fighter against evil. Today, the ossuary is a protected monument and serves cultural and spiritual purposes. It is evidence of the medieval perception of death and the afterlife. It is recommended to visit it together with the Parish Church for the full experience.

Synagogue

The synagogue is a significant architectural and cultural monument of the Jewish heritage in the city. It was built in 1913 on the site of an older synagogue from the 18th century and represents the Art Nouveau style with oriental elements. The building was originally the center of religious life of a large Jewish community.

During World War II and the Holocaust, the Jewish community was tragically decimated and the synagogue ceased to serve its original purpose. Today it has been renovated and serves as a cultural center - concerts, exhibitions, lectures and other events are held here. The interior is exceptional with beautiful decoration, arched windows and a preserved women's gallery.

Trenčín castle

Trenčín Castle is the most prominent landmark of the city and stands on a steep limestone cliff above the Váh River valley. It dates back to the Great Moravian period and has undergone many reconstructions over the centuries. It was an important defensive fortress and the seat of powerful Hungarian nobles, including Matúš Čák Trenčínsky.

The castle offers a magnificent view of the entire city and the surrounding countryside. The area contains several towers, palaces and exhibitions of the Trenčín Museum. The castle well, which is surrounded by a legend about a Turkish princess, is of interest.
