Historical monuments in Trenčín

In the center of Trenčín, within a radius of approximately 2 km from the Hotel Elizabeth, there are several important historical monuments that document the rich past of this city. The dominant feature of the city is the Trenčín Castle, majestically towering above the Váh Valley, which is one of the largest castles in Slovakia and was the seat of important noble families. Below the castle is the City Tower, from which there is a beautiful view of the historical center. Nearby is the Peace Square, lined with Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses, where we can also find the Plague Column from the 18th century.

Imagine that almost 2000 years ago, Roman soldiers were moving in the territory of Trenčín. This is evidenced by an inscription carved into a massive rock. A historical reference from 179 is one of the few Roman written references that confirm the stay of the Romans in Central Europe. The Roman inscription on the castle rock below Trenčín Castle is dedicated to the memory of the victory of the Romans over the Germanic Quadi. Right in the Hotel Elizabeth, through the glass wall, you can read the ancient report of the commander of the Roman legion Maximianus.

Another interesting building is the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in the Gothic style, which hides several historical artifacts. Not far from the church stands the County House, the former seat of the county, now used for cultural purposes. A walk through this part of the city offers not only a glimpse into history, but also the atmosphere of the picturesque historical core with cafes, galleries and quiet corners.
